After the superb walking tour in Quito we decided to try and find a free walking tour in Cuenca! After working out where to meet the tour guides we decided to get there early to avoid the rushing around whilst lost feeling like in Quito.

This turned out to be an absolute waste of time. We spent about 45 minutes sitting in the main square waiting patiently and people watching before finally giving up and deciding to do our own walking tour!

Now for some reason there was somewhere in the region of 100 near-identical markets selling sweets that littered the outskirts of the main square and some of the surrounding streets. Many of the stalls were being harassed - not by pushy market sellers, but by bees. Thousands of bees. They took a particular interest in any sweet that involved honeycomb.

After Emma bought half of the sweets at the market, we decided to visit the new cathedral. It's sheer size is something to behold. For a building built in the 1800s it has been maintained superbly with the marble looking as fresh today as I could only imagine it did when it first opened.

We had been recommended to check out some local ruins as they were free (who can argue with that?). 10,000 steps later and we finally arrived there. Thankfully they also had some interesting birds to look at as the ruins were well, pretty ruined.

Unfortunately the day was cut short by torrential rain. Might need a boat to get to Peru tomorrow.
