Day 59: A touch of class

As we finished on our luxury journey we entered into a rather wet Buenos Aires. The weather was entirely British. The touch of home was unwelcome though. We hadn't had rain since Ecuador! Never in the entire history of England has it gone two months without raining.

We settled into the apartment before heading out into the rain. We chatted with a tourist agency for a while to figure out what we wanted to do with our last remaining days in South America. A plan was starting to form. We booked into a tango show for the evening, but I will get to that later.

As we exited the tourist agency we were met with a lot of noise and thousands of people marching on the street. I couldn't tell whether this was a parade, a protest march or a strike. We continued up the road to one of the main squares that was filled with even more people. The police were starting to baracade off a side road.

We escaped all of the low level chaos and continued up the road. Emma wanted to go into the Christmas shop. It was a bit weird and completely out of season. Nothing looked like it was worth buying. Our next stop was the obelisk, a several hundred foot tall shaped rock.

On our way back to the apartment we saw a pool bar. It was a dark room that led onto the main street with blaring Spanish music. There didn't seem to be anyone other than the workers in there but we decided to go in anyway. We paid for an hour of pool and got on with it. We were terrible to start, very rusty. However after a beer we soon started to find our feet again.

We got ready to be picked up to go to the tango show. Emma had been nagging about going to a show for the entire trip. This was finally her moment. We were taken to the riverside where we had an impressive view of high rise buildings on the other side of the water. We were taken into the building. This place looked a bit posh.

Our table was right next to the side of the stage - a perfect view. We selected what food we wanted - steak naturally, before tucking into the unlimited red wine. The wine was really flowing. After our delicious steaks the show was starting. I didn't really follow the storyline due to excess amounts of malbec and the fact it was in Spanish. The dancing however, was utterly ridiculous. The speed and grace as they glided across the floor was tremendous. I couldn't help but be impressed. This was far better and more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

After they finished, one of the dancers who looked like Daniel Radcliffe and his partner took the time to teach some moves. I found this a very funny event and couldn't take it overly seriously. Everyone was very merry by this point. The bus journey home was joined by howling Brazilians who thought it amazing that we were from London.
